Inside every tooth there is a nerve. When decay reaches it, the nerve gets infected. That is what gives you the deep pain that keeps you awake at night.
A root canal takes that nerve out. It cleans the inside of the tooth and closes it.
Here is the important part. The pain people connect with a root canal is the infection *before* treatment. It is not the treatment. Once the tooth is numb, you should feel nothing. Most patients go back to work the same day.
After a root canal the tooth becomes weak. So we usually put a cap on it. The cap stops it from cracking.
The other option is to pull the tooth out. Keeping your own tooth is almost always better. It also costs less than putting a new tooth later.
